Hello there,

Having worked between European headquarters and Japanese operations in the industrial sector, I often observed a recurring misunderstanding.

In many European organizations, leadership is decisive and centralized. Efficiency, clarity of responsibility, and cost optimization are highly valued. Once a product is shipped and performs as specified, the job is considered largely completed.

In Japan, however, market expectations extend far beyond product performance.

Trust is not built only through engineering excellence. It is built through responsiveness, attentiveness, and sometimes what might appear as “over-servicing” from a Western perspective.

Late-night support calls. Immediate on-site visits. Detailed follow-up reports. Small adjustments that may not even be contractually required.

From a purely efficiency-driven viewpoint, this can seem excessive. On the other hand, from a Japanese customer's perspective, it is a demonstration of long-term commitment.

Many foreign industrial companies underestimate how decisive this difference can be. Product superiority alone rarely guarantees sustainable growth in Japan. After-sales engineering often determines whether a supplier becomes a partner - or remains just a vendor.

Understanding this distinction is not about changing corporate identity. It is about adapting execution to market reality.

For European industrial firms exploring Japan, this nuance can make the difference between frustration and long-term success.

If European companies want to succeed in Japan, they must move beyond financial investment and start investing in understanding.
